Our review
BankUnited High Yield Savings needs a clear current quote and access terms before it earns a place on my shortlist.

BankUnited High Yield Savings is the current savings product to investigate; BankUnitedDirect has merged into BankUnited. I would not make the decision based on a familiar parent name or a rate quoted on a comparison site. The useful review starts with the specific account currently available, the terms offered to you and the steps required to get your money back. Those details matter especially when opening remotely.
Why the product transition matters
A dedicated online account may help separate savings from everyday spending. Whether that is an advantage depends on the actual transfer process and the return after fees. I would not describe the account as easy to use until there is enough evidence to support that judgment, and I would not assume branch services for a differently branded account apply to this one.
An existing BankUnited customer may evaluate this account differently from a new online customer. Familiarity with statements and support can reduce the cost of adding savings, and there may be less value in recreating the same arrangement at another institution. But that convenience needs to correspond to features actually available to the particular account. A product name containing high yield is not a substitute for a location-appropriate quote, and the old direct-bank offer cannot supply a missing current number. I would compare the account only after its actual pricing is established, with the return assessed at the intended balance rather than an advertised maximum from another channel.
The end of BankUnitedDirect makes old online reviews less useful for deciding how the current BankUnited account operates. I would evaluate the current opening channel, service area and way to withdraw a substantial amount, rather than assume the former direct-bank experience carries over. Until those product terms are established, there is not enough basis for a confident recommendation on yield or convenience. For an existing BankUnited customer, the comparison may be simpler, but familiar branding alone does not resolve the change in product and service arrangements.
The gap in evidence should narrow the recommendation rather than invite a list of generic questions for a prospective customer. I cannot confidently call this a leading savings choice while the applicable earning conditions and current return remain unresolved. What can be said is that the disclosed verification stage makes it a poor place to rush funds needed immediately, and that the former BankUnitedDirect identity creates a risk of comparing outdated information. A current customer who already has an established access route may have a stronger case. A new saver choosing among well-documented alternatives deserves a clearer reason to accept the remaining uncertainty.
The verification stage before ordinary access
The bank states a $50 opening deposit and no monthly maintenance fee. More consequentially, it does not consider the account open until both identity and the external funding account are verified; withdrawals and additional deposits are restricted until then. That makes the opening process unsuitable for money that must be used before verification is complete. A visible initial deposit should not be treated as proof of a working withdrawal route. For an established account, ordinary limits and any wire option remain separate parts of planning a large payment.
The verification condition is more significant than a routine request to upload identification. Until both identity and the funding account have been verified, the bank says the new account is not considered open and ordinary additional deposits and withdrawals are restricted. That leaves an important intermediate stage between submitting an application and having usable savings. A saver moving money ahead of a near-term expense should not count that stage as completed banking access. For a longer-term reserve, the same condition may be manageable, but it belongs in the choice of when and how much to move, rather than being dismissed as a technicality in the application process.
Current pricing must belong to the current account
BankUnitedDirect has merged into BankUnited, so the former direct product's pricing and access arrangements cannot simply be carried forward. The current High Yield Savings account needs to be evaluated on its own applicable market, balance requirements and charges. Until those details are established, there is no sound basis for projecting a current return from an older review. An existing BankUnited relationship may change the convenience calculation, but it does not establish the savings yield.
How much confidence the evidence supports
I did not find sufficient product-specific independent experience to judge account setup, customer service or transfer speed confidently. Bank marketing and a general company profile cannot fill that gap. I would want a working support route and a clear escalation process for an account-access problem. The legal deposit institution is BankUnited, N.A.; insured-bank status does not promise that every transfer will be immediate or forecast long-term stability.
Older reviews of BankUnitedDirect can describe a real customer's experience and still be the wrong basis for judging today's account. The opening route, pricing and available support may have changed with the product's transition into BankUnited. I have not found enough well-matched current testimony to say whether this change improved or worsened service. That uncertainty is particularly relevant for someone choosing the account solely online, without an existing BankUnited relationship. It is less informative to average unrelated bank ratings than to recognize the limit: the current account's practical withdrawal experience has not been established by the evidence I reviewed.
